What to know before choosing a monitor for CS:GO?
When choosing a monitor for CS:GO, there are a few things you need to know. We explained subjects like; screen size, refresh rate, response time, G-sync/FreeSync, resolution, display panel in basics below. For further information, you can visit Reddit’s subreddit about monitors by clicking here.
Screen Size and Resolution
When choosing a monitor for CS:GO, screen size doesn’t matter much. Just don’t get a monitor below 22-inches because I think they are not very suitable for gaming. If you don’t have room for a 27-inch, you can pick a 24-inch or a 23-inch monitor. You should also know that most of pro CS:GO players prefer 24-inch monitors because you simply need to move your eyes less on a 24-inch screen in comparison to a 27-inch screen. So my advice, if you want to buy a monitor for especially FPS games like CS:GO, go for a 24-inch monitor.
When you are looking at resolution, you can choose between options like 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), 2560 x 1440 or 3840 x 2160 (4K Ultra HD). For resolution, higher is always better but you should know that higher resolution means higher price. I don’t recommend to buy a 4K monitor for playing CS:GO because 4K gaming monitors are a bit expensive for now. If money is not an issue, of course pick the monitor with highest resolution. But for budget, go for a 1920 x 1080 monitor so you can spend that extra money for a nice gaming mouse for CS GO. You should also know that you can downscale your monitors resolution any time you want to get some extra FPS.
Response Time, Refresh Rate & G-sync/FreeSync
A gaming monitor should have a low response time to provide a nice gaming experience. When playing CS:GO, a monitor with low response time lowers input lag and this is very important for aiming and shooting. If you want to buy a monitor for CS:GO, you can check out the monitors with 4ms and below. My advice; you should aim 1ms response time for your new monitor because those are best for FPS games like CS:GO.
Another thing you need to consider when buying a monitor is its refresh rate. Refresh rate specifies the amount of times the screen is refreshed to display a new image. Most monitors in market have a 60Hz refresh rate but if you want a smooth gameplay in CS:GO, you should have a monitor with higher refresh rate. Most of professional e-sports players use 120Hz or 144Hz monitors for playing CS:GO. My advice; you should definitely pick a 144Hz or a 120Hz monitor because a 60Hz monitor won’t change your gaming experience much. In addition, 144Hz monitors are very affordable in these days. If you want to see the difference, click here to see a comparison video between a 60Hz monitor and a 120Hz monitor in CS:GO.
G-sync and FreeSync are new technologies from Nvidia and AMD to prevent screen tearing. Screen tearing is a problem that occurs when the refresh rate of the monitor is not synchronized with the output of your graphics card. Monitors with G-sync (for Nvidia graphics cards) or Freesync (for AMD graphics cards) provides a smoother gaming experience with a lower overall input lag. If you buy a monitor with these technologies, definitely it will be a plus but it is not so essential.
Video Inputs and Display Panel
Your gaming monitor should have the required input options for your PC. Most of recent graphics cards have HDMI and DVI outputs so your new monitor should have one of these. If you want to buy a 144Hz monitor for CS:GO, you should connect it to your PC with a DisplayPort cable because HDMI and DVI can’t handle such a high refresh rate.
When you are looking at display panels, there are several types you need to know. You can choose between IPS panels, TN panels and VA panels. For FPS games like CS:GO, TN panels are the best because they are affordable and they also provide low response time and high refresh rate. IPS or VA panels will provide better color accuracy and of course you can go for them but i would recommend a monitor with TN panel for playing CS:GO.
